How I Prepare for My Self-Photoshoots

by | Aug 2, 2021 | Blogging Tips

When I tell people I take my own photos for my blog and Instagram, they are immediately wowed and amazed! I actually prefer shooting pictures of myself. This past year Iā€™ve gotten more comfortable in front of my camera. Photoshoots that usually took me hours to get the right photo now take me a fraction of that time. Today Iā€™m sharing with you tips that you can use on how I prepare for my self-photoshoots.Ā

Get the Vision

Before I even get in front of the camera, I have to plan out everything. When I say everything, I mean everything from the outfits, poses, makeup, location, and props.

Poses

As a blogger, I am usually inspired by others. I get a lot of inspiration on how to pose from Pinterest, Instagram, and magazines. It is totally fine to be inspired by another personā€™s content, but I also put my own personal ā€œMeaghan Lindseyā€ spin on it.

I save the inspiration pictures on a private Pinterest board, so I can easily find them when itā€™s time for my photoshoot. Then I study the picture. Some people may be like, what do you mean you study the picture? Wellā€¦ I ask myself these questions: ā€œwhy do you like this picture? what stood out? what made the photo good?ā€Ā  Once I figure out the answers I then study poses, look at the location, and try to visualize how I can make it my own. I also jot down notes, such as where I want my eyes, or hand placed in the picture.

Location

I like to get a variety of pics that feature me indoors and outdoors. For my indoor photoshoots, I usually do them in my home or at restaurants. I utilize the spots in my home that make the picture stand out. My home is not fully decorated, so a lot of the times I have to stage the photo to make it the way I want it to look.

As for the outdoors, I have two faithful locations that I shoot my own photos at. These two areas are new and upcoming shopping malls. I usually go on Sundays when the crowd is very light. In the beginning, I would be uncomfortable taking my own photos in public places, and if you are feeling this way it will take a few photoshoots to get used to others watching. Now Iā€™m fine with the onlookers. Most people smile or admire that I am snapping my own content.

Outfits and Props

Finally, It is important for me to have my outfits, equipment, and props laid out and packed the day before my photoshoot. I make sure I have everything packed in the car and ready to go! I am a firm believer in batching my content, so I usually take 2-3 outfits. With that comes different jewelry, switching up my lipstick color, and using different props.

To have successful self-photoshoots, you must plan. Preparing before your self-photoshoots will save you time and help you shoot your own content successfully!
