Top 10 Must Have Tools for Natural Hair

by | Mar 5, 2020 | Natural Hair

After I began my natural hair journey, I was so overwhelmed by all of the hair care products and hair tools on the market. I remember the day after my big chop I went to Sally’s Beauty Supply and splurged on hair products, accessories, and tools. I really didn’t know what I was buying, I just put it in the cart. I wasn’t really educated on my natural hair and what to expect. I should have done my research on product ingredients and tools because that would have saved me time and money! Fortunately for you, I have compiled a list of 10 must have tools that you need for your natural hair journey!

Satin Bonnet

Wearing a satin bonnet at night will ensure that you natural hair is protected. Sleeping on a cotton pillow case without a satin bonnet may cause your natural hair to lose moisture and that’s one thing us naturals can’t afford! Also, sleeping without a satin bonnet may cause breakage, especially if you tend to toss and turn during the night.

I personally purchased my satin bonnet from FlorBella Boutique at a natural hair show. It was a little pricey ($40) but def worth the investment. You can find inexpensive ones at local beauty supply stores. I purchased this one because it was larger than the average satin bonnet which allowed my fro to fit, especially as it continues to grew larger and larger.

detangling brush, natural hair tool
Denman Brush

Detangling Brush

I have tried many detangling brushes, but the Denman detangling brush has been my favorite. Detangling for us naturals can be a tedious and painful process, but the Denman brush minimizes the headache with minimal shedding.

natural hair tool, hair clips
Hair Clips

Hair Clips

This tool makes sectioning your natural hair much easier. For most haircare and styling, it is better to work in sections. I personally love the Salon Care 3 Inch Butterfly Clamps. I use this kind because no matter how much my hair grows, my hair can fit in the clip. I also prefer these plastic clips because they are easy to clean and don’t rust like other clips.

scalp massager
Scalp Massager

Scalp Massager

I usually give myself scalp massages with my fingers nightly, but when I found this tool it changed the scalp massaging game! Massaging your scalp increases hair thickness, by stimulating the follicles and encourages hair growth.

Add some peppermint oil or tea tree oil to you scalp and use the scalp massager, I guarantee you will love the feeling. It is so therapeutic. I usually add the Mielle Organics Almond Mint Oil! I absolutely love the feeling!

natural hair tool, afro pick
Afro Pick

Hair Pick

The BIGGER the hair the better! This is one of the first products I purchased once I returned to natural. You will definitely need this tool to achieve a fuller look. I prefer the plastic hair pick, because I like the way it feels on my scalp. When using the pick you want to carefully pick out the roots so that you don’t lose curl definition.

natural hair tool, diffuser attachment to hair blow dryer
Blow Dryer with Diffuser

Diffuser

This tool is a must, especially for wash-and-go’s in the colder season. A diffuser helps dry curls while keeping the curls in tact and it minimizes frizz. It also cuts down on drying time, while increasing hair volume.

natural hair tool, bobby pin styling
Styling Bobby Pins

Bobby Pins

Have you ever heard of the popular saying, ” I got 99 bobby pins, but I can’t find on!” This is true on so many levels! haha This tool is a must have, and I suggest buying a few packs of these. Like the quote says, they will get lost! Bobby pins can be used to hold your hair in place. In addition, you can achieve different styles with bobby pins. Currently, there is a trend going on, where you can use bobby pins to add a little fun to your hairstyle and spice up the look.

wide tooth comb, natural hair tool to aid with detangling
Wide Tooth Comb

Wide Tooth Comb

Even before I went natural, I owned a wide tooth comb. This tools helps with detangling. I also use this during my deep conditioning application to ensure that the product is distributed evenly.

faux locs with hair jewelry, hair tool

Hair Jewelry

If you are anything like me, then you can get bored with your natural hair. Adding hair clips or hair jewelry can definitely spice up your look. Look how some of my curlfriends use hair jewelry to spice up their look!

natural hair tool :shears for haircuts or trims
Shears

Shears…..and a Good Pair!

This tool is necessary if you want to cut your hair yourself. I absolutely recommend to get your hair professionally trimmed, but I understand if you want to do in between trims, or snip away some of the damaged ends when you see them.

The importance of having a good pair of shears contributes to your hair health. Cutting your hair with dull shears can cause more damage than you think. Cutting your hair with the wrong scissors can cause your ends to be damaged as they are being cut. These damaged ends can easily split, which will cause you to trim your hair more frequently. This will in turn cause you not to be able to retain length.

During your natural hair journey, you definitely want to obtain the tools I mentioned. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

What are some of your favorite natural hair tools?

Until next time, Love and Light!
