The first tip I was told when I started transitioning from relaxed to natural hair was to deep condition. I started deep conditioning right away, but I was doing it all wrong! I created the Ultimate Guide to Deep Conditioning where I share āHow Toā deep condition, quick tips , and my favorite deep conditioners. You can get my free resource here!
Why Deep Condition?
Deep conditioning will help improve the overall look, feel and manageability of your hair. Routine deep conditioning will produce healthier, softer, and less damaged hair.
How to Deep Condition Like a Pro!
Start with clean hair. Deep conditioners usually work better after using a clarifying shampoo.
Section hair. It is easier to work in sections, especially for thicker hair types. It is recommended that you section hair in four even sections.
Apply deep conditioner. Apply a generous amount on each section. Focus on the ends and use your fingers to rake the deep conditioner from tip to root.
Cover and apply heat. Cover your hair with a plastic cap. You can also use a plastic bag. Use a hair dryer, heating cap, or steamer to apply heat. It is important to use heat. Heat allows for the whole hair strand to become open and receive the benefits of the product.
Let it sit. Depending on your hairās porosity, you should let the conditioner sit in your hair for 15-30 minutes. It is unnecessary to deep condition longer than 30 minutes. This can cause your hair to become overloaded with moisture. You run the risk of your hair feeling like mush!
Rinse out and dry. You should use warm water and rinse the product out thoroughly. Your final rinse should be with cold water. It is also good to use a t-shirt or microfiber towel to remove excess water.
And youāre done, style your hair as desired!!!
Quick Guide: Doās and Donāts of Deep Conditioning
D0ā¦.
- Routine deep conditioning, at least once a week
- Use heat, it increases the absorption of the product
- Focus on your ends, your ends are the oldest, driest part of your hair. It is more susceptible to breakage and splitting: hence split ends!
- Use deep conditioners with natural ingredients, water should be the first ingredient ( the first ingredient listed is the most concentrated in that product)
DONāTā¦.
- Skip deep conditioning. I see a major difference in my hair now that I routinely deep condition
- Overdo it, 30 minutes should be the max. Never sleep overnight with your deep conditioner
Remember there is no such thing as a āquickā deep condition. āDeepā conditioning requires time to put moisture back into your hair!!
