Pre- Poo: What is it & What are the Benefits?

by | Jul 16, 2020 | Natural Hair

I recently was shopping at Marshals, when I ran across Aunt Jackie’s, Balance: Grapeseed and Avocado Oil. I had been thinking about doing a pre- poo after I had read a blog post and viewed a video about it. This summer my natural hair has been extremely dry, and I thought maybe this will help with moisture retention. I picked up the oil and started to read the label and on the bottle it said, “Excellent Pre-Poo Treatment.” Immediately I was sold!

What is a Pre- Poo?

A pre-poo is exactly as it sounds, preparing your hair before the shampoo. The process involves applying hair with oils or conditioner before washing it with shampoo.

Common pre-poo treatments include oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil. The Aunt Jackie’s Pre-Poo Treatment is packed with oils such as, Castor Seed Oil, Soybean Oil, Coconut Oil, Grapeseed Oil , and Avacado Oil. The treatment also has loe Leaf Extract, hydrolyzed Keratin, and citric acid. This treatment is said to help improve porosity level and establish better moisture balance.

Pre- Poo Benefits

My natural hair is low porosity, so of course I wanted to see if it would work on my natural hair. Products tend to sit on top of my hair and weigh it down. I can honestly say using this pre-poo treatment added moisture to my hair. With that being said, there are many benefits that a pre-poo can provide. Here’s a list of its benefits:

  • Adds extra moisture to dry hair
  • Makes detangling easier
  • Promotes softer hair
  • Boosts effectiveness of conditioner
  • Reduces breakage over a long period of time
  • Helps promote length retention over a long period of time

I recorded my first impressions using the Aunt Jackie’s Pre- Poo Treatment Oil on my YouTube channel You can watch it here!
