Last September, Miss Tracee Ellis Ross released her hair-care line, Pattern. This hair-care line is catered to curly and coily haired girls. Pattern has been a hot topic since she launched it. I have been hearing so many mixed reviews on how Pattern Beauty stylers work on type-4 natural hair. After many weeks of watching reviews, I finally decided to try it out for myself. The price point for each product is pretty pricey ($25 ea.), so I decided to pick up the travel sizes at Ulta Beauty. I picked up the: Pattern Strong Hold Gel, Pattern Styling Cream, and Pattern Curl Gel. I will be sharing my honest opinions on how the Pattern stylers worked on my low porosity, natural type-4 hair.
Hair Prep:
Before I applied the stylers to my hair, I shampooed my hair with a clarifying shampoo, and deep conditioned like normal. In addition, I applied a light weight leave-in.
I wanted to find out how each product worked on my hair within one wash day, so split my hair into 2 sections, straight down the middle. I used the styling cream on both sides, but on one side I did my twist-out with the strong hold gel and the other side with the curl gel. You can watch the complete video on how I used the Pattern Stylers here.
Pattern Styling Cream
This cream is extremely thick. When I applied it on my hair it was very smoothing . I felt like the styling cream really penetrated my hair strands and gave me a nice boost of hydration and shine. I’m not to crazy about the smell, but I can appreciate this product because it is made with no silicones, sulfates, or parabens.
Pattern Curl Gel
This gel gave my curls a light, flexible hold. I applied it on top of the styling cream and it added a nice amount of definition to my type-4 natural hair. This gel had the consistency of a gel and a cream. It’s slippage is everything!
Pattern Strong Hold Gel
Out of all of the stylers this by far is my favorite. I applied this overtop the styling cream. My curls were left defined, shiny, bouncy, and had a “strong hold.” This product definitely lived up to its name. This gel is smoothing and has a tacky feeling. I’ve never felt a gel with this consistency. You can tell it is made with quality ingredients.
